A Level preparation enhanced by French film study day at the BFI

1 February 2024

The British Film Institute in London was the setting for a focused French day of study for Upper Sixth students Martha, Chloe and Isabelle on Thursday 1 February.

The students were given a presentation which explored the Nouvelle Vague – the French New Wave art film movement that emerged in the last 1950s – and its influence on the style and themes of contemporary French films. Among the films the students were shown clips from and explored in the session was Les quatre cents coups (The 400 Blows), directed by François Truffaut, which will feature in their upcoming mocks and A Level exams. To conclude the day, the students enjoyed a screening of the 2014 film Bandes de filles (Girlhood), written and directed by Céline Sciamma.

After the session, the students fed back to Language Assistant Miss Southern, who accompanied them, how useful it was to analyse the films with an expert in New Wave cinema, as well being valuable vocabulary revision spending a full day speaking and studying in French.
