Woldingham ‘lives simply’ on Wellbeing Wednesday and supports the work of the Cardinal Hume Centre

27 February 2023

On our first Wellbeing Wednesday of 2023, the whole school headed outside into the Surrey Hills for a sponsored walk in aid of the Cardinal Hume Centre, following a morning where we took up the challenge of ‘unplugging’ from phones and other devices.

The day began with a whole school Mass to mark Ash Wednesday, before students headed to lessons, many of which were a little different as staff and students refrained from using interactive boards, iPads and other devices. Alternative approaches taken in lessons included quiz-style revision of previous lessons and creating posters to collate information as an alternative to PowerPoint. In their health education class, students created informative posters about cyber bullying and took the opportunity to reflect on the benefits of not being online all the time.

Being away from devices continued after lunch when students and staff walked 3.4 largely hilly miles around and through our lovely valley.  The rain just about held off, there was less mud than often seen in February, and it was a great chance to enjoy being out in the fresh air, away from the hustle and bustle of normal school life. Importantly, the money raised by doing something different for an afternoon will make a huge difference in helping people facing poverty and the threat of homelessness in London.

Our Lenten Wellbeing Wednesday was organised by the Chaplaincy team as part of the school’s response to CAFOD’s LiveSimply award. The award encourages and challenges schools to show how we are living simply; in solidarity with people in poverty; and sustainably with creation.

All sponsorship money for the Cardinal Hume Centre can be paid via this link on Woldingham Community or given to Mrs Hooper in the School Office.
