Year 8s prove they get their steps in

2 February 2023

Thanks to four Year 8 volunteers, Maria, Peach, Sophie and Vaish, we now know that they walk an average of 8,600 steps every day between lessons. The four Year 8 students used wearable devices to measure their steps and record how far they walked between 8.30am and 4.00pm. The students, who are a mix of day girls and boarders, measured their steps before and after school as well for five days. The daily step count usually didn’t include PE lessons as they often had to take off their devices for sport so it’s likely that most students walk well in excess of 10,000 steps every day, taking into account their steps before and after school.

‘We know walking and being outside is really good for both our physical and mental wellbeing and all of our students get plenty of fresh air walking between lessons. Until now we didn’t know how far they walk every day. Now we do. Not only is our 700-acres wonderful to look at, it’s also good for us. Thank you to Maria and Vaish (pictured), Peach and Sophie for taking part in our research. They told me they enjoyed taking part and they were enthusiastic participants,’ said Jenny Rawlinson, Director of Communication.
