Woldingham School drivers Malcolm and Steve are ‘hidden heroes’ for Caterham Foodbank

12 January 2023

Twice a week, when not bringing Woldingham students to or from school, Malcolm Yates and Steve Adam are volunteer drivers for Caterham Foodbank.

Malcolm, who drives Woldingham’s Purley and Kenley daily minibus, heard about the foodbank’s desperate need for drivers from his wife, who also volunteers there and was keen to help, recognising “the clear need in this present economic climate”. As soon as he mentioned it to Steve, a familiar face to students on our Edenbridge minibus, Caterham Foodbank had two new volunteers.

Since September, Malcolm and Steve have been collecting boxed food from the foodbank’s warehouse in Caterham and delivering it to Oakhill Church on Mondays and Caterham Baptist Church on Thursdays. Both churches provide food for more than 80 families each week. The dedicated duo also collect food from local branches of Tesco, Morrisons and Co-op, taking the donations to the warehouse, where they are sorted by other volunteers.

Caterham Foodbank recently described Malcolm and Steve as its 'hidden heroes'. Woldingham School is very proud of their support for people in our local community.
