Faith in Action lecture explores the power of community

15 September 2022

Woldingham was delighted to welcome Professor Francis Davis, Head of Digby Stuart College, Roehampton University, to give our annual Faith in Action lecture on Wednesday 14 September.

The lecture launched the Sacred Heart goal for the academic year, 'building community', and Professor Davis, who is a Woldingham School governor, looked at the meaning of community and different types of community, and reflected on what it feels like not to be part of a community and what can happen when a community breaks down.

Professor Davis talked about inspirational community builders and leaders, including John Willis, who was born without fully formed arms and legs and founded Power2Inspire, an organisation that aims to achieve inclusion through sport.  He also reminded us of wonderful role models from our own community of Sacred Heart schools, such as former President of Ireland and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson and Woldingham’s Mary Douglas, author of one of the founding texts on anthropology.

Professor Davis’ engaging talk inspired students to ask numerous questions at the end, keen to explore the subject further and to ask Professor Davis about aspects of his very distinguished career.
