Sports Dinner and Awards celebrates excellence, improvement and participation

26 May 2022

Sport in all its forms was celebrated in true Woldingham style on Friday 20 May at the annual Sports Dinner and Awards, which was made even more special thanks to the inspiring speech from GB swimmer and Olympic medallist Jazz Carlin.

As well awarding prizes for the coach's player and players’ player for teams across the year groups, the evening highlighted the sporting achievements of the Upper Sixth who leave this summer. Special mentions go to Upper Sixth form students India H, Woldingham’s outgoing Sports Ribbon, who won The Sacred Heart Association Cup for Outstanding Contribution to School Sport, Bea B for winning Sports Personality of the Year and Flo B for The Castle Cup. Woldingham’s Sportswoman of the Year was won by Year 11 student Olivia R.

“We have relished sport being almost back to normal this year after the disruption of COVID,” said Mrs Caroline Treacy, Woldingham’s Director of Sport. “After an online event in 2020 and a dinner with just the Upper Sixth last year, places at our Sports Dinner and Awards for 2022 were in huge demand.

As well as celebrating sporting excellence, improvement and participation, we looked back at the recent enhancements to our Sports Centre and ahead as we finalise plans for our new state-of-the-art swimming pool. It was a wonderful evening. Thank you to everyone – students, staff and parents - who continues to make sport so amazing at Woldingham.”

Sportswoman of the Year Liv R, Year 11

Liv has had a fantastic and very busy year after picking up a National Championship medal playing for the South East Touch Rugby team last August. She has since been selected to play for England U18 at the European Championships in France this summer. Liv’s real passion is full contact rugby and she is currently training with Harlequins Centre of Excellence Squad.

Sports Personality of the Year Bea B, Upper Sixth

You cannot pass Bea around school without her smiling, saying hello and asking how you are. She is hugely respected by her peers and throughout school. This year she has captained the 2nd XI as well as running a lacrosse club for other year groups.

The Sacred Heart Association Cup India H, Upper Sixth

India has got stuck in since her very first day at Woldingham. You can always rely on her to demonstrate a drill and her work ethic is fantastic. A superb Sports Ribbon, role model, team player, and someone who can always be relied upon, India has been a delight to teach, coach and work with.

Highly Commended Harriet A & Sophie D, Upper Sixth

Both Sophie and Harriet have immersed themselves in school sport for the past seven years. Sophie has a true love for sport and has always strived to improve and develop her skills. She is one of the most versatile netballers we’ve had in school and is a force to be reckoned with on court. Harriet has played everything we’ve had to offer and excelled across the board. She is a master of all trades, especially athletics, which is her true passion. She is highly competitive, respected by all and true all-rounder.

The Castle Cup Flo B, Upper Sixth

Flo has played all sports for school, but it is on the hockey pitch where she excels. She has a lovely, kind manner with her peers and has been a role model to girls coming up through the school. Her knowledge of the game is astounding, yet she is not someone who shouts the loudest.  Flo leads by example, always working hard on the pitch and being very caring off it.

Team of the Year Senior 2nd Hockey XI

This is always a hotly-contested award. One of the things we pride ourselves on at Woldingham is that we don’t just focus on the “A” teams. We have real strength and depth and our B and C teams regularly have tremendously successful seasons. This year, the 2nd XI hockey team has embodied what sport is all about - working hard and having fun doing it. Their improvement as individuals throughout the year culminated in some excellent team performances.
