We always enjoy the return of Woldingham's major summer sports, cricket, athletics and tennis. Excellent numbers of students across the year groups attended cricket trials last weekend and it looks set to be a promising season. Our U12 A and B teams played their first ever cricket fixture for Woldingham against Croydon High. Though neither was victorious this time around, both teams contested well, with the U12A team losing on the last ball of the match. Mr Allberry was particularly impressed with the performances by Verity O for U12A and Chiara W for U12B.
The tennis season got off to great start with a 19-10 win for the Seniors in their first away fixture at King’s College School Wimbledon. There were some tightly fought games, with several going to tie-breaks. The tennis trials were also very well attended and Mr Rae is looking forward to seeing the students in action at a variety of fixtures this term.
Athletics fixtures also began this week, with our U13s taking part in a friendly meet at Croydon High. This was really useful preparation ahead of the District competitions later this half term. Standout performers were Mia C, who won the 800m event, and Ella A and Eliska S, joint winners of the high jump, clearing 1.20m.
Although rounders is no longer one of our major sports it is still a popular activity amongst our seniors and this week Year 11, Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth teams took part in the District Senior competition. Well done to the Upper Sixth team for reaching the final, losing to Caterham by just half a rounder.
As we say a fond farewell to hockey, netball and cross country for a few months, congratulations to all our students awarded colours for excellent performance in these sports – and for swimming - at the end of the season.
