Year 8 students tackle topics such as cryonics and crop production for AQA qualification

Miss Charlotte Owen, Head of Marden

Four Year 8 students delivered excellent presentations to a small panel of staff on Monday 25 April. Since October, Alice, Isobel, Laura and Sophia have worked independently on a recognised Level 1 Project Qualification, examined by AQA, which is essentially a mini version of the highly-regarded A Level EPQ.

I was proud to hear all four of them talk about their chosen topics so confidently and eloquently, particularly as these topics are outside the remit of the school curriculum. We were treated to presentations on the positives and negatives of cryonics from Laura, a discussion about what Europe would be like without the floods and forest fires of the last decade from Isobel, an experiment carried out by Alice looking at whether anti-blue light glasses help improve sleep, and the effects of artificial intelligence in crop production from Sophia.

Each student displayed strong subject knowledge and evidenced extensive wider reading in their answers to the questions posed by the panel. They also showed the ability to self-reflect and tell us what they had learned throughout this project process, what went well, what could be improved and what they would do differently if they had the opportunity to do the project all over again.

I look forward to receiving their results from the exam board on GCSE results day in August. Well done, girls!
