Students explore world class programmes offered by US universities

Mrs Aly Mason, US and Canadian Universities Co-ordinator

On Friday 22 April, 18 students in Years 11 and Lower Sixth considering a university application to the USA enjoyed a working lunch with admissions officers from Fordham University NYC, NY; Syracuse University, Syracuse NY; and Suffolk University, Boston, MA.

Our guests initially spoke about their own institution and then more generally about the US application process. The informal atmosphere was highly conducive to a productive question and answer session. Students asked a range of questions from the basic, “What is the Common Application”, to the more subtle “How nuanced towards a certain field should my Common Application essay be?”, covering just about every topic in between.  The allocated hour flew by, with several students staying to ask specific questions of individual officers.

The students found the session very helpful. It opened their eyes to US universities beyond the Ivy League, which also offer world class programmes, and they are now better equipped to widen their fields of research, which we will capitalise upon during higher education sessions later this term.  It was a great opportunity, and we are very grateful to admissions officers Monica, Lisa and Tom for their time and expertise.
