After school on Tuesday 15 March, Woldingham drama students were thrilled to take part in sessions run by theatre director, choreographer, and educator Eugenio Contenti, from New York’s American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA).

Eugenio, whose US credits include Cabaret, Once, The Full Monty, Sister Act, and Spamalot looked at musical theatre with students in Years 7 to 9, exploring the song and character structure of some of Alan Menken’s most famous songs, such as Somewhere That’s Green from Little Shop of Horrors.

The session for students in Years 10 to Upper Sixth was a Stanislavskian-based workshop, designed to give an insight into what it’s like to train as a professional actor. Our budding Woldingham performers relished the opportunity to learn from Eugenio, and his colleague Jasmin Donaldson, who talked about studying at AMDA. As Theodora in Upper Sixth explained, This was an exciting opportunity to learn from professionals who work in Broadway and to explore techniques beyond our current curriculum in depth. The workshop took me a step closer to understanding professional higher education training by combining theory and practice during the session.”
