Collaboration and friendly competition centre stage at Woldingham-hosted Philosothon

Woldingham was delighted to host an inter-schools Philosothon yesterday (10 February 2022), welcoming judges from a number of different universities and teams from Battle Abbey School, Brighton College, Caterham School, Notre Dame School, and The Royal School. That's great, you may be thinking, but what is a Philosothon?

A Philosothon is a friendly competition in which teams work together to reach a set of philosophically satisfying ideas. Members of the team are scored by the quality of their contributions, but also for their ability to help others to contribute. In a world of echo chambers and instant reactions, a Philosothon provides students with a chance to think, reflect and work together to reach reasoned judgments. It was a real pleasure seeing students from Year 9 to 13 think through some really big ideas in a highly mature way.

We were delighted that two of our students came away with prizes. Rosie S won the Year 12 Award and Molly C won the Year 13 Award. Brighton College was the overall winner. We very much hope that this will become an annual fixture and look forward to expanding the competition to other students in the future.
