Dickens’ A Christmas Carol arrives at Woldingham in January

Daisy S and Ava D, Year 11

On Wednesday afternoon, Years 10 and 11 were transported back to Victorian England when we were treated to a spectacular performance of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol in the auditorium.  It was a great opportunity for us to not only enjoy the show, but also to revise the novella (one of the GCSE English Literature examined texts).

Quantum Theatre put together a three-person adaptation of the Dickens classic, which consisted of fast-paced physical theatre, multi-rolling and evocative lighting and sound in a 65-minute production. The performance was set against a believable snowy Victorian London backdrop. The cast of three actors cleverly captured Dickens’ wit, through their portrayal of the miserly Scrooge, Mr Fezziwig and Mrs Dilber, to name a few. They also skilfully evoked our sympathies for poor Bob Cratchit and his family, enabling Dickens’ central themes of the importance of charity, compassion and love to be made clear to the audience.

The performance was a thoroughly enjoyable way of ‘kick-starting’ our GCSE revision. We would like to thank Quantum Theatre for putting together a brilliant production of A Christmas Carol and the English Department for organising it.
