Cross country, netball and swimming success as sport resumes after half term

11 November 2021

Mrs Caroline Treacy, Director of Sport

Woldingham sport hit the ground running after half term, with cross country and netball success and some excellent swimming to impress our new Head of Swimming, and former GB backstroke swimmer, Jessica Fullalove.

Our Senior Netball team was in action on Wednesday 9 November, defending the Senior District Cup. With several members of the squad out due to mocks and Grease it meant playing with a bare seven and 2nd VII players stepping up to join the 1st VII. Alison N joined India H in the shooting circle, whilst Sophie VT joined Alice S in the defensive circle. Both students rose to the occasion and played some superb netball.  A convincing first win 18-0 over RAAS B put the team in the right frame of mind before further wins over RAAS A (5-4), Woldingham 2nd VII (9-0) and Oxted (7-4) to bring the cup home again.

Netballers across all years were delighted to see the new sports hall floor, which was laid during the half term holiday. As well as looking extremely smart and making the sports hall noticeably brighter, it offers players much better grip when we, inevitably, bring some games indoors during the winter.

It’s been an exciting week in the pool with notable performances from Sophie V and Amie G in Year 10 and Maddie L, Lower Sixth, in the Intermediate and Senior District Gala. Special mention to Bella E in Year 10 who stepped in at the last minute to complete the Senior Team. Our new Head of Swimming Jessica Fullalove, who joined this term, was delighted with the whole squad and is excited for the future of swimming at Woldingham.

The House Cross Country competition took place in the week before and after half term, with an individual race for each year group. The weather was incredibly kind, meaning there was far less mud to battle than in previous years.  Congratulations to all our race winners, shown below, and to overall winner, Stuart House.

Year 7 Chloe R (Duchesne)

Year 11 Rosie J (Digby)

Year 8 Mia C (Barat)

Lower Sixth Katy N (Stuart)

Year 9 Isla E (Barat)

Upper Sixth Harriet A (Digby)

Year 10 Amie G (Barat) and Alice K (Stuart)

Several of our race winners also performed excellently at the Schools District Cross Country event at RAAS on Tuesday 9 November, as Mrs Barnes and Mr Hillier describe below.

Mrs Barnes and Mr Hillier

It was great to be back at the District Cross Country event at Royal Alexandra and Albert School (RAAS) after a year’s absence due to COVID. The weather was kind, warm and dry, and the students were in very good form. Nearly 30 runners, from Year 7 to Lower Sixth, represented the school and in true Woldingham style everyone was very supportive of each other, which helped settle any pre-race nerves.  Woldingham students achieved some very good individual results: Chloe R was 6th in the Year 7 race, Mia C 3rd in the Year 8 race, Amie G was 8th in the Intermediates and Maddie L 4th in the Seniors. These students go through to the county round, which is the next step towards being picked to run for England. Well done to everyone who ran and good luck to those through to county level.
