Marden celebrates bonfire night

Marden celebrates bonfire night

11 November 2020

Although it wasn’t possible to hold our traditional bonfire and fireworks night for the whole Woldingham community this year, we were able to have a special bonfire event for our ‘Marden bubble’ of Years 7 and 8 on Friday 6 November.

Earlier in the week, in their House groups, Mardeners enjoyed a fun and rather messy session making guys and banners, with the help of their respective House Captains in preparation for Friday. At the end of lessons on Friday, Mardeners gathered in Marden dining room to enjoy hot chocolate and muffins. Suitably refuelled, each House group paraded with its banner the short distance to Orchard Field, where the guys awaited.  Before these could be placed on the (as yet unlit) bonfire, excitement grew as Dr Whitehead prepared to give his judgement on the winning House guy and banner. This year Barat’s Goldilocks banner and Duchesne’s Nutcracker guy took the honours.

Head of Marden, Miss Charlotte Owen, said, “The students thoroughly enjoyed watching their handiwork go up in flames and it was lovely to see them having the opportunity to socialise, something that has, for good reason, been much rarer than usual this term.”
