Tour success and other sporting news

13 February 2020

Mrs Caroline Treacy, Director of Sport

In recent weeks our netball teams have seen great successes: excellent results across the board against CLFS; the U14B team beat Warlingham in their district league; the U13A and B teams won their respective District Netball tournaments; and the U12A team have qualified for the Surrey Netball Finals, which will be held in March.

In hockey there were wins for the U15B against Streatham & Clapham High and for our U14B team against Old Palace and the 2nd XI drew with St Benedict’s.

Our swimmers have also been busy with various galas and are awaiting the results of their most recent District competition.

Our Year 8 netball and hockey squads enjoyed a tour to Reading last weekend, despite it being somewhat curtailed by Storm Ciara. Grace and Charlotte share their tour report below.

With fresh new kit and bags all packed, we boarded the coach for our trip to Reading on Friday 7 February. Everyone was buzzing with energy and excited for the matches ahead. After an hour-and-a-half long drive, we arrived at Leighton Park School for our first hockey matches.

With both Woldingham teams securing early goals, we were off to an amazing start! The A team scored three goals in the first quarter, and the B team five in the same time frame. Many more followed - most notably by B team Player of the Match Phoebe who scored a spectacular eight goals. There was also amazing partner work from Alice and Keira in the A team who scored three great goals each. For this, and many more reasons, Kiera was given Player of the Match. Although the opposition put up a good fight, our teams won both matches: 16-0 for the Bs and 8-0 for the As.

We returned to Leighton Park the next day for a triangular netball fixture against our hosts and LVS Ascot. Our teams fought hard and we were victorious in all four matches. After a delicious lunch, we boarded our coach once more, only to hear that, because of Storm Ciara, our final match against Reading Hockey club, was to be cancelled - along with our planned bowling trip!

Still, we had one fixture to go and, full of energy at the prospect of going out with a bang, we arrived at Woodley Netball Club. Our B team went first, taking an early lead and scoring convincingly. Toni played especially well, as did Phoebe, who was rightfully awarded Player of the Match. The final result was a staggering 19-6 win.

The A team’s match was tougher. This was by far the hardest opposition we had to face, and by half time we were trailing. A dramatic second half and one ankle sprain later, we were back on the coach to the hotel, defeated, though not in spirit. We had a lovely time and would like to thank everyone, Miss May, Mrs Lock, Mrs Williams, and our wonderful coach driver, Barry.
