Celebrating LGBT History Month

Celebrating LGBT History Month

11 March 2019

Students from Year 11 to Upper Sixth celebrated LGBT History Month at the last meeting of WOW (Women of Woldingham), with Miss Noble and Miss Reay. It was a fantastic turnout and we learnt about key historical events and celebrated the bravery of those who have fought for the rights of the LGBT community. We looked at governmental laws that have been passed, such as Section 28 and the Sexual Offences Act of 1967. A 50 Years of Activism timeline quiz got students and staff debating issues and it was a real eye opener to see how those events have shaped our current political and cultural landscape. We agreed that there is still a long way to go, especially for those LGBT people living in areas of the world that are not as accepting, and that we shouldn’t become complacent about the status quo. Delicious rainbow flag cakes, made by Miss Noble, and celebratory images of Gay Pride London ended our fabulous session.
