On Monday, Year 10 and their tutors headed off to Aylesford Priory, Kent, for a Day of Reflection, the theme of which was “Beautiful Child of God”. It was an opportunity for students to listen, respond and reflect on their life story and the contribution we can make within the school community and beyond.
The day started with the students looking at their own individual uniqueness (Jer 1:4-8) and being made aware that we can all make a difference, the challenge being that we are able to return to school aware that “we must be the change we want to see in the world” (Mahatma Gandhi).
The students reflected on their God-given gifts and talents, thinking also of the inspiring women who encourage them to go out and be “change agents” for good. In small groups the students put together a written piece of work or created a piece of artwork which they shared together with the whole year group – some chose to compose a rap!
The students prepared the liturgy and took an active role by proclaiming the readings, writing the prayers of intercession and sharing what they had learnt from spending time together. They also dramatized the introduction of Mass, the penitential rite, the scripture readings and the communion reflection, and they left pledging to be the “light shining in the world” by their words and good actions (Mt 5 13-14). This inspiring and uplifting day was enjoyed by the students and helped them realise that by affirming and working with one another we can all make a difference.
