Miss Jaclyn Leach, Director of Sport
The sporting term got underway with preseason hockey and netball training, which was enjoyed by over 160 students. We were delighted to welcome Rhea Dixon (pictured) as our special guest coach, with the girls benefitting from her huge experience as a Superleague netballer, not to mention her achievement of winning a silver medal as part of the Jamaica team at this year's Commonwealth Games.
Hockey
Hockey is our main sport this term and we have had a fantastic set of Saturday block fixtures, with strong opposition including Caterham, Colfe’s and Lingfield College. The U15 XI are undefeated in their regular season matches, and our U12s have acquitted themselves extremely well in their first half term of hockey for Woldingham. The 1st XI have enjoyed fixtures against Caterham and Gordon’s in our Friday Night Lights series. Our next match will be at home against CLFS on the same day as our Bonfire and Fireworks evening, when we are hoping for lots of home support!
Swimming
Our swimmers have had an incredibly busy and successful half term, competing in Surrey competitions as well as friendlies. We currently sit second in the district, with high hopes of a move up to the top of the table when the district galas resume after the break.
Netball
Netball has seen plenty of very competitive cup, county and district competition fixtures. At the time of writing, we await news of the qualification for Surrey Finals for our U16 VII and U15 VII, with both teams in contention for a place. There has been district success for our U16B, U15B and U13B VII and we’re looking forward to all our teams taking part in what we hope will be very successful Sisters in Sport Plate competitions in the second half of term.
Individual Success
Congratulations to all our students on their individual successes this half term and in the summer holidays, including:
- Isla S, Year 9, who won a silver medal at the Wimbledon Sailing Club regatta.
- Ria P, Year 9, whose successful cricket season led to automatic selection for the Lord’s Youth U15s.
- Amera T, Year 8, for whom the highlight of a great summer of athletics was a silver medal in the 200m and a bronze in the 60m at the World Youth Games in Gothenburg.
- Daisy O, who reached the semi-finals of the England hockey cup, representing the East Grinstead Talent Academy.
- Daisy W, Year 10, who was selected for the England Korfball Under 15 squad to compete in the Flanders International Tournament in Belgium.
- Amaya S, Year 11, who was selected for the London Pulse Kent PDP Hub.
Woldingham Athlete Development Programme
This term, we have launched our new Woldingham Athlete Development Programme (WADP) for our sports scholars. The students have enjoyed a series of meetings with their mentors, fitness testing with the company ‘Strength and Movement’, and two workshops. In the first workshop, Head of Netball Miss Magee gave a talk about her Commonwealth Games experience with the Northern Ireland squad, focusing on the life of an elite athlete, the sacrifices it takes to get there and the importance of performance nutrition, as well as giving our scholars plenty of tips on how to balance academics and high-level sport. The second workshop focused on player performance analysis, looking at each scholar’s physical, mental and lifestyle characteristics and setting goals for how to improve in each of these key areas of elite sport. The girls have responded really well to this new programme and we are excited for the WADP opportunities that will follow in the second half of term.
