To kick-start our Year 9 Landscapes Project, students took part in a hands-on photography workshop designed to develop both their technical understanding and creative approach to image-making. Under expert guidance, they were introduced to key photographic fundamentals, including aperture, shutter speed and lighting, alongside compositional principles such as framing, leading lines and the rule of thirds.
Taking their cameras outdoors, students explored Woldingham’s own landscape, experimenting with different focal lengths, viewpoints and perspectives to capture texture, form and the changing qualities of natural light. Students were encouraged to look closely at their surroundings and consider how photographic choices can transform the way a landscape is experienced.
The photographs Year 9 took will form the starting point for the subsequent stages of the project, inspiring and informing a series of drawings, printmaking and ceramic pieces. This cross-disciplinary approach will allow students to translate their observations of the landscape into a range of materials and processes.
We look forward to seeing how these initial photographs develop into exciting and ambitious final pieces, which will be displayed for all to enjoy in our Summer Exhibition.
