Miss Jaclyn Leach, Director of Sport

The first half of the summer term may only be five weeks long but it certainly hasn’t been short of sporting success.

Our U12 hockey squad reached the ‘Final Four’ of the Sisters in Sport Plate competition, which was held at the Lilleshall National Sports Centre. Woldingham started slowly against a very slick King’s, Worcester team (eventual winners), however they found their groove in the second half, showing much more confidence in both attack and defence. Although the game ended in defeat, our girls took this confidence into the 3rd/4th place play-off against Dame Allan’s. Again, our opponents were super-slick, with one or two goal-scoring machines on their side Although we couldn’t quite get as many goals as the opposition, the girls were delighted to finish with a 4th place medal and a brilliant standing in this national competition. With so much experience under their belts, Allegra, Nina, Amelia, Millie, Harriet, Jodie, Lila, Saffi, Tabby and Lara are ready to push on even more as U13s next season.

Having been crowned Surrey Champions earlier this year, our U15 indoor cricket team progressed to the Regional Finals, where they finished in a brilliant 3rd place against the very best schools from across London and the Southeast. The girls made a flying start, winning their first two group matches to put themselves top of the group - a brilliant achievement at this level. Their momentum was only halted by a narrow defeat against Ashford, the Kent champions, which meant Woldingham finished second in the group and moved into the3rd/4th place playoff. In their final match of the season, the girls dug deep and delivered a composed, determined performance to beat the Hampshire champions - signing off with a well-earned win and claiming 3rd place on the day.

Our tennis players represented the school brilliantly at the Surrey Schools Tennis Festival, with Saffi T and Allegra H winning silver medals in the U12 competition and Amelia C and Zia H taking home bronze medals in the U18 competition. Saffi and Allegra won a tough first match on a tie break, before breezing through the next two to reach the semi-finals. A tense semi-final saw City of London Freeman’s save two match points but the girls showed great determination to win 11-9. In the final they faced Amesbury, who qualified from the other group in second place but seemed to have saved their best tennis for the final, beating our girls in a close fought match. Amelia and Zia also kicked off with a tight match which they won on a tie break, against Trinity. After losing to a very strong St John’s team, the girls picked themselves up to win their next two matches and qualify for the 3rd/4th play off for bronze. Facing Reed’s, one of the top tennis schools in the country, Amelia and Zia played some great tennis on the clay courts, with great communication, to take the win.

Woldingham athletes performed exceptionally well at the U14 and U15 Districts at the K2, Crawley, with four students selected to represent South Surrey at the Surrey Athletics Championships:

  • Daisy L – 1500m
  • Jola A – Shot Put
  • Isla M – High Jump
  • Maya A – Hurdles

We wish them good luck for what will be a very competitive day of athletics on Saturday 13 June.
