Sixth Form and Year 11 drama students travel to Athens to explore the performing arts of ancient Greece

Theodora, Year 11

During the February half term break, I was lucky enough to go on a trip to Athens with the Drama Department, which was an amazing experience. On our first full day in Athens, we visited the Acropolis and had a guided tour around the site, before heading to the museum nearby. I found it incredibly interesting, especially the talk about how drama and theatre were viewed in ancient Greece; it was surprisingly philosophical and really fascinating to hear about. The views from up by the Parthenon were gorgeous and the weather was lovely, which made it even better.

In the afternoon, we had a great time learning dances from different parts of Greece at a workshop, as well as discovering the history and traditions behind them. The next day we took part in a mask-making workshop, which was very cool. I found the process of making my mask really relaxing, and the technique we learned was very interesting. We also enjoyed an acting workshop, where we had loads of fun performing as the Ancient Greek Furies.

The following day we walked to Syntagma Square to watch the changing of the guards outside the parliament building, which was fascinating. After lunch, we came across a parade in celebration of the Dionysus, who was god of theatre (as well as of winemaking, orchards and fruit, vegetation, fertility, festivity and more). We also stopped at the Areopagus, the first court of justice in the world, where people in ancient Athens were put on trial.

On our last full day, after a stop at the Corinth Canal on route, we visited the Ancient Theatre at Epidaurus, once of the best-preserved theatres in Greece, where we tested its famous acoustics. Back in Athens, we went out for a final evening stroll, and saw the Acropolis beautifully lit up at night.

This was an incredible experience that I would absolutely recommend to anyone. Thank you to Miss Williams and Mr O’Gorman for organising and leading this brilliant trip - I really felt immersed in the culture and history of Athens and in the performing arts of ancient Greece.
