Mrs Gail Haythorne, Assistant Head Empowered Learning
Our Empowered Learning student reps and staff recently began a collaboration to build a library of revision ideas, which all students will be able to use throughout their academic journey to give them a varied repertoire of approaches and build their metacognitive understanding.
At Woldingham, our aim is to empower students to be lifelong learners, able to adapt any learning situation to their personal strengths, needs and preferences. One way of doing this is for all students to understand how to choose revision techniques that suit both the subject and their own personal profile. Experience and neuroscience both tell us that revision can be a lot more effective, and, dare I say it, fun, if you know a wide range of techniques and apply them thoughtfully.
At their first workshop, students and staff brainstormed revision ideas on a padlet (virtual bulletin board), before splitting into groups to prepare a PowerPoint slide on one technique of their choice.
It was a very productive session and participants are feeling very positive about the project, as they share below:
“Being actively involved doing this with the teachers makes me feel listened to.” (student)
“Thinking about revision skills helps you realise how you can tailor techniques to different subjects so that you don’t feel stuck. Understanding how to choose a revision method based on the stage you are at means you can apply it better and get better results.” (student)
“I’m doing a junior EPQ as well and this feels similar - I like having staff advice at the same time as being able to take the initiative.” (student)
“Working with students on this project really helps you see their perspective on the learning, and insight into what works and why.” (teacher)
The completed project should be available in good time for the summer exams and tests, and we look forward to getting feedback from students about how it has benefited them. We hope this will help everyone feel more confident and in control of their work, and that they might even have fun experimenting with different ideas!
