Lilico, Upper Sixth
As Woldingham’s International Ribbon, I was delighted to organise our first Model United Nations (MUN) conference, which took place after school on Thursday 4 December.
Model United Nations is a simulation of the United Nations, where students role play as delegates of assigned countries to discuss global issues and work together as a team to produce a draft resolution. Twenty students from Year 7 upwards took part in our two-hour conference, many of them experiencing MUN for the first time.
The conference began with delegates giving a one-minute speech to present their country’s stance on the conference topic of immigration. Students were exceptionally well prepared and it was very inspiring to listen to their clear speeches, delivered with confidence. This was followed by an unmoderated caucus, where delegates walked around the room to negotiate and collaborate. Initially, there were multiple small groups but, as the deadline for the draft resolution approached, these merged into three larger groups. It was amazing to see so many enthusiastic delegates engaging in the discussion to find solutions. In the final vote, one of the resolutions passed with a majority, achieving the conference’s main goal.
Having participated in Model United Nations conferences in Japan, I have always wanted to introduce this experience at Woldingham. MUN has taught me research skills, negotiation, and teamwork, and it was incredibly rewarding to hear from many participants that they feel more confident about their public speaking and teamwork skills thanks to this event. I’m excited for this to become a regular event at Woldingham, and I look forward to more students discovering the challenging but fun experience of Model United Nations.
