On Monday 3 November, A Level Politics students visited Tandridge District Council for an inspiring and eye-opening look at how local democracy works. Our day began with a presentation about the Council and its decision-making processes, followed by a talk from the Leader of the Council, who explained their role and how it helps shape our community. We then worked in groups to discuss different areas of the Council’s responsibilities before taking part in a lively mock committee debate — complete with microphones in the official Council Chamber — on how to allocate a local grant. The councillors’ thoughtful answers and encouragement to express our opinions confidently made the experience both engaging and personal. This was a fantastic opportunity to see how local politics directly improves the places we live in and we felt inspired to get more involved in civic life.
