Miss Fiona Beaumont, Interim Director of Sport

The summer term is always an exciting time for sport at Woldingham, and this half of term has been no exception. With the sun shining and the grounds in excellent condition, students have embraced a packed calendar of fixtures, competitions and training sessions across a range of sports. From the tennis courts to the athletics track and cricket pitches, there has been no shortage of energy, enthusiasm, and impressive performances. Below is a round-up of highlights from what has been a great season so far.

Athletics

We started the athletics season on a high with a fantastic performance from our Year 9 and 10 teams at the District Athletics competition. Out of 15 schools, the combined Woldingham team placed 5th overall, with Year 9 finishing 3rd and Year 10 placing 7th.

Despite the challenging heat, the girls performed exceptionally well, showing resilience and determination throughout the day. Special congratulations to Nicole, Maia, Daisy, and Amaya, who have been selected to represent South Surrey at the Surrey Schools Athletics Championships in June.

Well done to all our athletes for an excellent day of competition and teamwork

Tennis

It has been a busy and exciting start to the summer term for tennis, with over 25 school fixtures already played and more than 50 girls representing the school across various matches.

The glorious weather has made for an enjoyable backdrop, and it’s been fantastic to watch so many impressive performances on court. Notable successes have come from our Open, U13, and U14 teams, all of whom have shown great skill and team spirit.

Many congratulations to Leila in Year 8 who triumphed in our ‘Play Your Way to Wimbledon’ competition, securing her place in the next round for the second year in a row — a wonderful achievement.

In the second half of term, we are looking forward to our Parent and Daughter Tennis Tournament on Wednesday 25 June, which is always a well-attended and highly enjoyable event.

Cricket

This half term provided ideal conditions for cricket, with beautiful weather complementing a packed calendar of both softball and hardball fixtures. The enthusiasm across all year groups was outstanding, and the teams have consistently demonstrated great skill, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Woldingham teams have taken on a variety of strong opponents, including Ardingly, Prior’s Field, Trinity, Dunottar, Kent College, and Caterham. Across all age groups, our players have shown excellent progress and resilience in competitive settings.

A particular highlight has been the strong start in the Hardball County Cup competitions. Our U13, U14, and U17 teams all recorded victories in their first-round County Cup fixtures, setting a strong foundation for the remainder of the tournament. The U17s impressed with a composed and confident performance to win their opening match against Trinity School.

The U15 softball team delivered an outstanding performance in the Surrey Foundation Softball Cricket Cup, finishing as runners-up out of 10 schools. This is a significant achievement, reflecting the hard work and commitment of the players and coaching staff.

There are plenty of exciting fixtures planned for the second half of the term, including the U13 Softball Cup and the U13 District Softball Competition, where the squad will look to build on its strong form; the next rounds of the District Hardball Tournaments for U13, U14, and U17 age groups; the U15s look to continue their strong start in hardball league fixtures against some strong opposition including Kingston Grammar and Claremont; and a tour to Cheltenham for our U14s, offering them valuable experience of competitive play in a touring environment.

We will also host a Primary Schools Cricket Festival, to encourage participation in cricket at a grassroots level and, of course, the traditional and much-anticipated Staff vs Parents/Students match on Speech Day, which promises to be a fun and competitive highlight of the summer term.

Woldingham’s cricket teams are thriving, and with more fixtures, festivals, and tournaments on the horizon, the second half of term promises even more opportunities for our players to shine.
