STEM Society competes against local senior schools and runs inspiring session for primary school pupils

20 May 2025

Mr Paul Rickard, Head of Science

It’s been another inspiring and action-packed few weeks for Woldingham’s STEM Society. Our flagship event, STEM Solutions 2025, brought together students from five schools, Caterham, Sevenoaks, Tonbridge, Warlingham and Woldingham, to tackle a series of science and engineering challenges, including a fiercely competitive quiz and a hands-on construction task.

The teams presented original ideas on this year’s theme, The Future of Medicine, to a judging panel led by Dr Brij Patel, who also gave our keynote speech (pictured) about how AI is transforming the world of medicine. Our team – Jovie, Annabelle, Tiffany and Lilico – impressed with their outstanding public speaking, scoring 19 out of a possible 20 for their presentation, and finishing a close second overall. Congratulations to Sevenoaks School on taking home this year’s trophy.

Beyond competitions, STEM Society recently ran its second STEM for Schools outreach event of the year, welcoming 27 Year 6 students from Godstone Primary for an afternoon of hands-on activities. From brush bots to hoop gliders, the pupils were fully immersed in STEM exploration – several calling it “the best thing they had ever done at school!” These events not only showcase our excellent facilities but also give our Sixth Formers the opportunity to develop leadership and mentoring skills. We have another session planned for June.

STEM Society members also spent a fascinating afternoon at McLaren’s HQ, which you can read more about here.
