Engaging mock election informs and educates students about the democratic process

4 July 2024

Mrs Katharine Payne, Head of Politics

There has been a buzz of activity in the valley over the last few weeks as the whole school community got involved in our mock general election. Students have had lots of fun, getting involved in campaign management, making marketing materials for their election stall or using their technical skills to create campaign videos.

A series of events concluded with hustings on Wednesday 3 July, where Lower Sixth students gave short speeches on behalf of the main political parties designed to win audience members’ vote. Our ‘candidates’ also responded well to questions from the floor. The whole school took part in the democratic process by casting their ballot, voting via tutor group constituencies to reinforce the message that they are voting for an MP not the PM. Results of the mock election will be shared in our final assembly on Friday.

This has been a fantastic opportunity for students to immerse themselves in an engaging and educational experience that mirrors the real-world democratic process. We have enjoyed seeing their enthusiasm and creativity shine through.
