Two teams of keen readers from Years 7 and 8 proved themselves very knowledgeable about children’s literature, and did Woldingham proud, in the South West London heat of the National Reading Champions Quiz on Friday 15 March.

Twenty teams from 13 schools competed for a place in the national final, tackling eight rounds of tricky questions on topics including dingbats, crime and mystery. After two and a half hours of competition, the result was a three-way tie for first place, involving Woldingham’s team of Faith, Farah, Lydia and Vivienne (main photo), Harris Academy Sutton and Finton House School. Finton House was knocked out after a first tie breaker question, leaving Woldingham and Harris Academy to answer the question of how many fables Aesop wrote. Harris Academy came closest to the answer (725), meaning Woldingham finished in a brilliant second place. Our other team, comprising Ava, Elodie, Lyra and Nithali (pictured below), achieved an admirable 12th place. All eight students did really well and I am extremely proud of them.
