SPORT ROUND UP

After many fixtures being affected by the snowy spell, we have finally got to play some sport and Mardeners have enjoyed some excellent results!  Not only did the Lower Juniors (Year 7) swim to second place at the District Gala, our U12A hockey team were runners up at the Surrey Plate and the U13A netball players qualified for Surrey County finals!

The U12 Hockey Squad had a fantastic day at Woking Hockey Club, where the Surrey Plate was held. Twenty one teams took part and after six pool matches the girls were riding high, having won four matches and drawn two. Finishing top of their section, they went on to face St. George’s in the quarter finals and played their best hockey of the day, with all team members fighting hard to win possession, moving the ball quickly and taking chances in the attacking circle. They then breezed through the semi-final, beating Reigate Grammar 5-0, to face Surbiton High in the final. Here, they were finally beaten, 2-0, by a strong, physical side. Their statistics on the day were very impressive: playing nine games, scoring 18 goals and only conceding two (in the final!). It was a superb effort, and Mrs Williams and Mr Metcalfe are extremely proud of the squad.

Our U12 and U13 netballers faced tough groups at the Surrey Schools Netball and, knowing that only the top teams would progress to the finals, the stakes were high.  The U12s played some good netball, winning two and losing four (two matches, by only one goal).  The U13 team’s first game, against Emanuel, was tightly contested and saw Woldingham come away with a 6-5 win.  The girls continued to play well and clocked up wins against Alleyn’s (7-5), Riddlesdown (7-4), Kingston Grammar (12-8) and St George’s, Weybridge (7-3).  Having done the hard work early in the day, the final match against Epsom was to see who would go through as group winners.  Epsom had extremely tall players at either end and, at the end of long day, proved a little too tough for the Woldingham girls, who lost 4-8.  Tied on points, it was goal difference that decided the final placings and saw Woldingham progress to the County Finals next month.  Huge congratulations to all the girls who played

Marden teams also took part in our annual Prep Schools Hockey tournament last weekend, which was extremely enjoyable. Congratulations to Danes Hill, whose U12A team emerged winners over Thomas’s Clapham in the final.

This week’s House swimming was an enthusiastic and competitive event, with girls from all year groups taking part.  It was an extremely tightly-contested competition and the results will be revealed after half term.

Finally, well done to our U13 hockey teams who won against Croydon High School earlier this week: 4-2 for the U13As and 4-0 for the U13Bs.
