The Greenwell Society’s lecture on 18 January challenged women to consider seemingly daunting work opportunities, when Catriona Laing a senior civil servant, was invited to talk about her career in the civil service. Her talk was entitled ‘My Leadership Journey Through Countries of Conflict’, where she explored working in countries such as Somalia, Sudan and discussed the role she will take on as she heads to Afghanistan in March.
She also elaborated on key projects she has undertaken whilst working in the Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit and the Ministry of Justice, both in London. The key messages taken away from the talk are to jump at any work opportunities however challenging they may seem and she emphasized that women can take on these roles just as well as men! The audience seemed to really enjoy the talk, not only because it provided an insight into some hostile environments but also because it showcased an interesting career that many can now aspire to.
