On a dark November evening our Chemistry team made their way to Whitgift School to take part in the Top of the Bench Chemistry competition. The team comprised Liesje Wilkinson, Josie Gilbert, Shana Pamparathi and Nicole Boyd, who were split up from each other on arrival, dressed up in lab coat and goggles and asked to follow instructions to carry out a 40-minute practical. Battling against the distraction of flashing cameras while they worked, they then joined with their competitors to tackle the multiple choice section of the quiz.
Once they had accomplished that, they were able to relax and sit back to watch a ‘mad’ scientist complete a range of unusual and exciting experiments, which included recreating a miniature big bang involving a hydrogen balloon, making jelly babies scream, and an experiment called ‘The Bad Hair Day’. Our team and supporters were delighted that Woldingham came fifth out of 12 schools, with a mere 10 points difference between them and the winners.
