Two Woldingham School pupils, Emily Oliver and Katie Wong have recently been awarded accolades that exceed expectations for their age and experience.
Emily Oliver, aged 17, has become an Associate of Trinity College of Music (ATCL). Whilst, Katie Wong, aged 16, received the Diploma of the Royal Schools of Music (Dip.ABRSM).
Emily's achievement is a diploma where the standard of performance is equivalent to the performance component of the first year in a full-time undergraduate course at a conservatoire or other higher education establishment.
ABRSM diplomas provide an authoritative assessment framework for a wide range of musicians beyond Grade 8. These highly respected and letter-bearing qualifications provide valuable opportunities for professional musicians (and those aspiring to be so) to gain recognition for their abilities and achievements.
The level of commitment and discipline required by both girls to practise is immense, particularly when added to their other school commitments, academic and extra-curricular.
This is an enormous reward to a flourishing music department within a school that does not solely focus on music. The diplomas are also on two different instruments requiring excellent teaching from more than one member of the music staff.
Woldingham School’s music department is comprised of John Hargreaves, Director of Music, Margaret Andrews, Chris Donnelly, Howard Dyer, and Helen Rowe.
