Woldingham School is a Catholic foundation and it belongs to the International Network of Sacred Heart Schools. It aims to provide for the religious and spiritual development of its students.
The role of the School Chaplain is to promote the spiritual growth and faith development of the whole School community. It is the Chaplain’s concern that the School offers and provides opportunities for students, staff and parents, to have a deep experience of a faith that is alive, based on Gospel values, and carried out in a Christian way of life. The Chaplain aims to work in partnership with everyone in the School and the wider Church community so that God’s Kingdom may be realised in our midst.
The School Chaplain is based in Shanley House and is at the service of the students and staff at all times. She teaches Religious Education. There are regular courses for students who wish to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, First Holy Communion and Reconciliation. The ceremony of Confirmation takes place each April/May – affording opportunity to Roman Catholic and Church of England girls in alternate years.
Student Sacristans from each year group are selected and trained by the Chaplain and the Sacred Heart Ribbon in the preparation and organisation of Masses and other Services and prayers.
The Sunday Eucharist celebrated by our Priest-in-Residence, is the principal religious event of the week. Masses for Holy Days, for the start of each Term and special Feast Days of the Society of the Sacred Heart are celebrated for the whole School Community. Mass for each of the four Houses takes place on the House Feast Day. An optional weekday Mass is celebrated at 8:00 am every Wednesday. Some students and Staff are commissioned as Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist. There is a Chaplaincy Group consisting of Staff and students who work together to ensure richness and variety in our worship.
Night Prayers are organised for each Year Group once a week and they take place in the Chapel or in the appropriate Year area.
In line with the spiritual and moral development programme of the School, students will have the opportunity for a Day of Reflection and Prayer while they are at Woldingham. Days of Reflection are organised by Year groups and take place on a Sunday, starting with a Year Mass. The annual Year Mass is an occasion for students, with their parents and teachers, to worship together as a community.
At present the religious life of the School is centred on one large and one small place of assembly. The first of these is the Auditorium in the Millennium Centre to which is attached a Sacristy. It is here that the whole School come together for Mass, Assemblies and other Services. The Chapel and Prayer Room are venues for Sunday Masses, House Masses, other liturgies, worship for small groups and for private prayer.
