Year 7 Geography and Maths Trip - 7th June |

Year 7 Geography and Maths Trip - 7th June On Thursday 7th June 2007, Year 7 went on a Geography and Maths trip to Kew Gardens. Our first task was a maths one. We had to find out the distance between Pagoda Vista and the Pagoda, without using a trundle wheel. We had people doing cartwheels, counting pigeon steps between trees and lying down on the muddy grass!!! We then had to estimate the Pagoda’s height and the direction we had travelled in. We worked in groups of three or four and had great fun competing against others. Then we went on to our first geography task which was to the Princess of Wales conservatory. Within the one big greenhouse there were 10 different world climate zones! We focused mainly on the desert, noting its characteristics and the ways in which the vegetation has adapted to its environment. After lunch we were whizzed of to our next geography task to study the Mediterranean climate in the Temperate House. Here we gazed down on the towering plants from the spiral staircase. We found the tallest plant which is the Chilean wine plant. We also found a cure for malaria which is the Quinine plant. Another favourite was the Eucalyptus plant which produces aromatic oil and catches fire to disperse its seed! Our last task for the day was a talk from the Rainforest experts, staff of Kew Gardens. We were told about the many amazing facts about this ecosystem such as the bamboo which can grow up to 1m in 24hrs. We really began to appreciate the diverse products we can gain from a rainforest including annatto (food colouring) and cocoa, and realised how important it is to therefore stop deforestation. We thought this was a perfect way to end the day, and we would like to thank the maths and geography department for making this trip possible. Kate Harris and Philippa Downs |
