Woldingham win the United Nations Association Fowler Trophy for 2008

Woldingham win the UNA Fowler Trophy for 2008. Congratulations to Sophie Mullen, Katharine Thomas and Amy Plender.

Every year Woldingham School enters two debating teams into the United Association Debating Competition. Our league area covers Surrey and the Croydon area of South London.

This year one of our teams, Sophie Mullen and Katharine Thomas, reached the final following an unbroken run of impressive victories. The final – which involves three debates between the six best schools in the league – took place at Sutton Grammar School on Monday 23rd June.  Unfortunately, Katharine Thomas was not available for this event, so her place was taken – with only three days notice – by Amy Plender. The motion that Sophie and Amy were arguing was that ‘two years compulsory military service would put the “great” back into Great Britain.’

Amy and Sophie performed marvellously and won their debate against Riddlesdown School. The league was won by Whitgift School, but we were judged to be runners up and awarded the UNA Fowler Trophy. Well done to Sophie, Amy and Katharine – and a big thank you to everyone who has supported debating at Woldingham this year.
