Our biennial Careers Convention held on Wednesday 20 February in the Millennium Centre was a runaway success, despite finishing slightly earlier than originally scheduled, due to a false fire alarm.   We had a wide range of exciting careers represented, as well as several Gap year organisations present.

Many parents and guests gave up their evening to share their knowledge and experience with all our students from Year 7 through to the Sixth Form.  Investment bankers, accountants and a stockbroker gave advice on careers in the financial sector.  A doctor, nurse, vet, dentist and research scientist talked about the subjects and personality needed for these caring professions.  Students found out about civil engineering, architecture and surveying and the value of professional qualifications in these jobs.  Entrepreneurs and business managers talked about opportunities in advertising, marketing, manufacturing and running a business and TV broadcasting drew a large crowd.  A solicitor and a barrister advised students on how to enter these professions and what their work involves.  In addition, the Army and the Police Force proved popular ports of call and the gap year organisations, including Africa Asia Venture, Projects Abroad and a cookery school were visited enthusiastically.

The younger years attended for an hour and using an activity sheet had to find out about three careers that they had heard of and three that were new to them.  This involved much activity and scribbling down the answers.

GCSE and A Level students were able to investigate and explore the options open to them post university and find out about the value of particular subjects and the kind of work experience and skills required for career areas that interest them.

All our guests talked of lively, attentive and intelligent students, who had clearly thought about their questions beforehand.  It was an event enjoyed by all!

The next Careers Convention is scheduled for February 2010.
