Unlike trends across the rest of the country, science, mathematics and languages are strong subjects at Woldingham School where students and staff are celebrating their best A level results across all subjects with students achieving a 100% pass rate, 98% of girls with A to C grades and 40% of girls with three or more A grades.

Woldingham students have performed exceptionally well in the sciences, mathematics and languages, bucking national trends in the uptake and success in these subjects among girls in particular. Girls, for instance, are generally under-represented in physics, a subject in which 80% of A level students are male and where uptake nationally has fallen by 56% in the past 20 years, with Chemistry dropping 37% over the same period. Woldingham girls have turned this stereotype on its head with a 100% A-grades achieved in physics and over 80% A-grades in Chemistry.

Mathematics is also particularly strong at Woldingham with 80% of students gaining A grades. In further mathematics, the story is even more positive with 100% of students gaining A grades.

The Confederation of British Industry has recently called for more students with language skills that will equip the nation for the future and will ensure the UK holds its position in the world economy. Woldingham girls have risen to the challenge with 100% A and B grades in Italian, Japanese, Chinese and German; with the majority of language students gaining merits in their Advanced Extension Awards in French and Spanish.

Headmistress Diana Vernon said: “I am absolutely delighted with these outstanding results. They are our ‘best ever’ and reflect the hard work and focus of the students as well as the inspiration and dedication of the teaching staff at Woldingham.”

Summary
60.7% A grades
86.3% A and B grades
98% A to C grades
40% 3 A grades or more
100% Pass rate overall
