Woldingham Staff Teams at the 2005 London Duathlon

Elizabeth Webster and Helen Barnes were the first to go out on their 10km run followed by the 20km cyclists: Roy Brown and Jenny Mayhew.  The final leg, a 5km circuit, was run by Rachel Tomlinson and Jonathan Webster, the only non-staff member of the team.

Amazingly, though each team competed independently and individual team members had different levels of experience and fitness, both teams came in at the same time – to the second! With a time of 2hrs 14 mins and 22 secs they were placed 46/75, quite an achievement for a first attempt.

Quite apart from the enjoyment of the event on the day, one of the most rewarding aspects was the amount of sponsorship money that was raised.  The whole school community was devastated by the news of the death of our Caretaker, Terry Murphy, in August. Terry was a keen runner himself and the teams decided to compete in his memory. Thanks to everyone's generosity they raised a splendid total of £800. £400 has already been sent to ‘Maggie’s Centre’, the official charity of the event, and the remainder to Marie Curie, Terry's favourite charity.
